Frequently asked questions
What is this blanket for?
It's our heavy-duty 8m x 6m fibreglass containment blanket, sized to fully cover a passenger electric or hybrid vehicle and built for the most demanding settings. Deployed over a car in thermal runaway, it smothers the flames, cuts off oxygen and slows the spread to nearby vehicles and structures until Fire and Rescue arrive. It suits dealerships, service centres, fleet depots, car parks and other higher-risk facilities.
What makes it heavy-duty, and how is it different from the standard car blanket?
This is our highest-rated blanket, with a 1600 degrees C maximum working temperature and heavier construction, versus the 1100 degrees C rating on our standard 8m x 6m car blanket. Choose this one where maximum protection is the priority, such as dealerships and fleet depots with many vehicles. If you need to cover a car but don't need the top rating, the standard 8m x 6m blanket is a lower-cost option, ask us if you're unsure.
Why do I need a specialised blanket, not an ordinary one?
EV battery fires behave very differently to conventional fires. They burn at extreme temperatures, can reignite hours after they appear to be out, and give off toxic gas. A standard fire blanket isn't built for these conditions. This blanket is rated to a 1600 degrees C maximum working temperature and tested to the European EN 13501 fire safety standard.
What size and weight is it?
It's 8m x 6m and made to fully cover a passenger EV. The blanket weighs about 29kg, and around 32.4kg packed in its carry bag. It's the heaviest blanket in our range, so plan for two people to handle and deploy it.
Does it meet an Australian Standard?
There is currently no specific Australian Standard for lithium-ion battery fires. This blanket is tested to the European EN 13501 fire safety standard, a recognised, rigorous benchmark for performance and durability, and it carries a rated maximum working temperature of 1600 degrees C, our highest.
How do I use it in an emergency?
If it is safe to do so, deploy the blanket over the vehicle to smother the flames, cut off oxygen and contain the fire, then get clear. Do not lift it to check, and never put yourself at risk. With practice, deployment takes around 60 to 90 seconds. Given its size and weight, this is a two-person job, plan and practise for that. We recommend running through the deployment once when it arrives, without exposing it to fire.
Will it put the fire out, and should I still call 000?
Always call 000 immediately. This blanket is a containment tool, not a replacement for the fire brigade. It contains and controls the fire in the critical early minutes, but it is not designed to fully extinguish an EV battery in deep thermal runaway, no blanket is. The battery can stay hot and reignite, so keep everyone clear and let the professionals handle it.
Does it expire, and how do I store it?
The blanket has no fixed expiry date, but you should inspect it regularly for damage and keep it in its carry bag. Store it somewhere easy to reach near where vehicles are parked, charged or serviced, wall-mounted or in a clearly labelled cabinet. It suits workshop and garage storage and normal temperature variation; avoid prolonged moisture or chemical contact.
Is it reusable?
The blanket is intended as single-use emergency protection. Once it has been used on a fire, replace it. If you're unsure whether it's still fit for use after any incident or damage, don't rely on it, contact us and replace it.
Is it suitable for dealerships, car parks and fleets?
Yes, it's purpose-built for exactly these settings: dealerships, service centres, fleet depots, car parks and strata buildings where maximum EV fire protection matters. Larger sites usually need more than one, positioned where EVs are parked or charged. For volume orders, see our Business & Bulk page or contact us.
What about shipping and warranty?
The blanket comes with a 12-month warranty. Because of its size and weight (around 32.4kg packed), shipping is calculated at checkout based on your location, and shipping is free Australia wide on orders over $500. As safety equipment, returns are subject to our standard return policy, contact us with any questions.
