Batteries are handed over the counter by residents, often already damaged, and CRC staff are the ones receiving them. Once the NSW stewardship scheme commences, that volume increases by design.

Counter-side containment bags, a compliant quarantine area, 1L extinguishers and staff procedure documentation for council WHS records.

Waste Collection Contractors & Fleets

The compaction blade is the most reliable ignition mechanism in the sector. A load fire twelve kilometres from the depot becomes a $24,000 clean-up at best and a $250,000 vehicle write-off at worst.

Typically needs

Cab-mounted 1L extinguishers and brackets per vehicle, a blanket for the dumped load, and a written dump-load procedure.

Materials Recovery Facilities

Screens, shear points and rollers puncture cells directly alongside staffed picking cabins. Sorters are closest to the ignition point and closest to the vent gas — a hazard most PPE registers don't yet cover.

Typically needs

Extinguishers at every cabin exit, full-face ABEK1-P3 respiratory protection, containment bags on the line, and large-format blankets for baled product.

Transfer Stations

High public traffic, mixed inbound loads and an active tipping face, usually with a single loader operator in a position to isolate a pile quickly. Often the site with the least fixed fire infrastructure.

Typically needs

9L extinguishers and 5m × 5m blankets at the tipping face, plus gatehouse containment for surrendered batteries.

Landfills & Resource Recovery Parks

Delayed ignition from cells buried in a pile, in the location holding the greatest fuel load on the premises — and where licence conditions on stockpiles, firebreaks and run-off apply directly.

Typically needs

Volume suppression, large-format blankets, plant-mounted equipment and a quarantine area that satisfies licence conditions.

E-Waste & Battery Recyclers

The highest concentration of damaged and end-of-life cells of any operation in the chain, held in one place pending processing or transport. Reignition risk is continuous rather than incidental.

Typically needs

Containment bags in volume, dedicated quarantine equipment, respiratory protection, and documented storage and handling procedures.

Scrap Metal & Auto Dismantlers

EV traction packs, hybrid modules and power tool batteries arriving inside vehicles and mixed scrap, then meeting shears, balers and shredders. Pack energy is orders of magnitude above household cells.

Typically needs

Large-format blankets, 9L extinguishers at processing points, and a dedicated EV pack quarantine arrangement separated from stock.

Skip Bin & Commercial Waste Operators

Unsupervised bins on customer sites, filled without any acceptance control, then tipped or compacted. Commercial and construction loads increasingly include tool batteries and site lighting packs.

Typically needs

Vehicle-mounted extinguishers, blankets for tipped loads, and customer-facing acceptance guidance.

C&D Recycling & Processing Sites

Heavy mechanical processing across mixed feedstock, with tool batteries, temporary lighting and site electronics entering the stream unnoticed and reaching crushers and screens intact.

Typically needs

Plant-adjacent suppression, blankets sized for mobile plant, and equipment positioned at processing rather than at the office.
