The Tradie's Problem: Cordless Tools, Lithium-Ion Batteries and the WHS Risk No One's Talking About

Walk into any tradie's ute, van, lockup or site shed in 2026 and count the lithium-ion batteries. Drills, impact drivers, circular saws, grinders, vacs, jump starters, work lights, headphones, mowers, blowers, two-way radios, even the kettle in the lunch trailer. A typical residential builder, sparkie, plumber or landscaper now carries between 20 and 50 lithium-ion battery packs across their gear — often stored in metal toolboxes, in 50°C work utes, in tin sheds, or near solvents, gas bottles and timber offcuts.

And that's just the tools. Add the EV ute in the driveway, the e-bike for the apprentice, and the home battery on the carport, and the modern tradie is operating one of the highest lithium-ion densities of any small business in the country.

This post is about why that matters, what SafeWork NSW and Fire and Rescue NSW are saying, and what a practical, no-BS lithium-ion safety setup looks like for a tradie, a small construction crew, or a facility manager running a depot.

The numbers in NSW

  • 323 lithium-ion battery fires in NSW in 2024 — up from 165 in 2022. A 95% increase in two years.
  • Emergency services now respond to roughly 5.7 lithium-ion fires a week in NSW.
  • Fire and Rescue NSW reports a sharp rise in waste truck fires caused by lithium-ion batteries discarded in household rubbish — compaction triggering thermal runaway.
  • IAG forecasts the average Australian household will contain 33 lithium-ion devices by 2026. Workplace numbers are dramatically higher.

SafeWork NSW lists lithium-ion battery storage and charging as a workplace hazard that employers must manage under the Work Health and Safety Act 2011. Like any workplace hazard, the duty is to identify, assess, control and review.


Why tradie workplaces are higher risk

Several factors stack up:

  • Physical damage. Battery packs get dropped, crushed, dropped into puddles, hit with hammers, packed under heavy gear. Mechanical impact is one of the leading causes of internal short circuits.
  • Heat exposure. A ute interior in a Sydney summer can exceed 70°C. Lithium-ion cells degrade — and become more failure-prone — when repeatedly heat-cycled.
  • Mismatched chargers. The classic "this one fits, she'll be right" with a non-OEM charger or knock-off battery is a leading ignition cause.
  • Co-located fuels. Tin sheds, work utes and trailers often store batteries next to petrol cans, gas bottles, paint thinners, sawdust and offcuts. A lithium-ion ignition source in that environment doesn't stay small.
  • Unattended charging. Bulk overnight charging of battery banks back at the depot or in the home garage — usually with no supervision, no detection and no suppression.
  • Knockoff batteries. Aftermarket and online-purchased replacement packs for major-brand tools are frequently uncertified and dramatically less safe than the OEM equivalents.

What an incident actually looks like

A lithium-ion battery in thermal runaway doesn't smoulder quietly. It typically:

  1. Begins off-gassing — releasing flammable, toxic vapour — minutes before any visible flame
  2. Vents violently as internal pressure builds (often described as a hissing scream)
  3. Ignites the vapour cloud with an explosive flash
  4. Burns at temperatures up to 1,000°C
  5. Spreads to adjacent batteries in the same toolbox/charging dock
  6. Releases hydrogen fluoride and carbon monoxide throughout the incident
  7. Can re-ignite hours or days later even after appearing extinguished

Inside a closed ute or shed full of timber, paint and gas bottles, the consequences escalate fast. The whole vehicle or shed often becomes a total loss.


WHS duties — what's actually expected

Under WHS legislation, the person conducting a business or undertaking (PCBU) has a duty to manage workplace risks so far as reasonably practicable. For lithium-ion, that typically means:

  • Risk assessment of where batteries are stored, charged and transported
  • Controls — designated charging areas away from combustibles and exits, no overnight unattended bulk charging where avoidable, supervision protocols
  • Training — workers know the warning signs and what to do
  • Equipment — appropriate fire safety equipment available and accessible
  • Procurement standards — original-manufacturer batteries and chargers, with RCM marking
  • Incident response plan — what to do when something goes wrong
  • Disposal — damaged or end-of-life batteries handled through proper recycling, not the general waste bin

Most tradie businesses currently have none of these formally in place. The standard ABE extinguisher in the work ute or site shed is not designed for lithium-ion battery fires.


Practical setup for a tradie business

In every work vehicle

  • One compact lithium-ion-rated fire extinguisher (1L), mounted accessibly
  • One small fire blanket sized for tools or e-bikes
  • A containment bag for any swollen or damaged battery removed from service

In the depot, shed or workshop

  • A dedicated charging bench or zone, separated from combustibles by physical distance or barrier
  • Larger lithium-ion-rated fire equipment
  • Clear signage
  • A written incident response plan posted near the charging zone

For larger commercial operations

  • Industrial-grade containment systems for bulk battery storage
  • Fire curtains for vehicle servicing bays and EV maintenance zones
  • Charging zones designed with separation, ventilation and detection

Smart habits for every site

  1. Buy original. OEM batteries and OEM chargers with RCM markings only. The $40 saving on a knockoff isn't worth the ute.
  2. Don't charge in the ute on hot days. The internal temperature does the damage.
  3. Don't charge unattended overnight in a shed full of timber or solvents.
  4. Pull damaged batteries out of rotation immediately — swelling, heat, hissing, weird smells are all stop signals.
  5. Never bin a lithium-ion battery. Take it to a B-cycle drop-off point — every Bunnings, Officeworks and most council waste centres accept them.
  6. Keep the right gear in arm's reach of where batteries are charged. Not behind the timber, not buried under the dropsaw.
