Lithium-Ion Containment Bags: Safe Storage, Charging and Transport
The cheapest lithium-ion risk to control is the one sitting on a shelf. Containment bags are a simple, layered defence for the spare batteries, drone packs and power tools most sites forget about.
Most conversations about battery fires focus on the dramatic cases — a car in a basement, an e-bike in a hallway. But a large share of everyday risk is far more mundane: loose spare batteries in a drawer, a drone pack on charge overnight, power-tool batteries stacked in a ute. The Australian regulator has recorded a steep rise in reported lithium-ion incidents, and reminds consumers that a damaged or poorly stored battery can catch fire, explode or vent toxic gas (ACCC, n.d.).
What a containment bag does
A fireproof containment bag is a fire-resistant enclosure designed to hold a single-battery thermal event — containing flame, limiting the spread of burning material and buying time. It doesn’t stop a cell from failing; it stops one failing cell from taking the workbench, the shelf or the vehicle with it. Used for charging, storage or transport, it turns an uncontained hazard into a contained one.
US workplace safety guidance lists storing batteries in dry, cool locations, limiting the quantity stored, and following manufacturer instructions among its core lithium-ion controls.

Where bags fit in a safety plan
- Charging: charge higher-risk packs (drones, tools, hobby batteries) inside a bag, on a non-combustible surface, away from exits — and never unattended overnight.
- Storage: keep spares and end-of-life batteries bagged and separated, in a cool, dry spot. Damaged or swollen batteries are the highest priority to isolate.
- Transport: a bag reduces the risk of a knock or short-circuit turning into an incident in a moving vehicle.
The same principle scales to industry. OSHA’s guidance for workplaces that handle batteries stresses controlling quantity, isolating hazardous materials and building battery-failure response into the emergency action plan (OSHA, n.d.). A bag is the small-scale version of that thinking.
