Is Your Home Ready for a Lithium-Ion Battery Fire? Most Australians Aren't.
Lithium-ion battery fires are surging across Australia. Here's what you need to know — and what you need on hand.
Every week in Australia, another lithium-ion battery fire makes the news. An e-bike left charging overnight in a hallway. A scooter battery that overheated in a garage. A home charger that malfunctioned while the family slept.
These aren't fringe incidents — they're becoming disturbingly common. And the uncomfortable truth is that most households and businesses have zero specialised equipment to deal with a lithium-ion battery fire. Standard fire extinguishers weren't designed for these blazes. By the time triple-zero is dialled, a battery fire can already be producing toxic fumes and temperatures exceeding 600°C.
Why Lithium-Ion Fires Are Different
A lithium-ion battery fire isn't like a kitchen grease fire or an electrical short. These batteries undergo thermal runaway — a chain reaction where cells overheat uncontrollably and are extremely difficult to stop once started.
- They reignite. Even after appearing extinguished, batteries can spontaneously reignite hours or days later.
- They produce toxic gases. Hydrogen fluoride, carbon monoxide, and other hazardous compounds are released during combustion.
- They burn hotter and longer. Conventional water or foam extinguishers are often ineffective or can make things worse.
- They happen fast. A charging e-bike can go from normal to fully engulfed in under 60 seconds.
Around 18% of lithium-ion battery fires occur during charging, with another 2% happening shortly after disconnecting. The remaining 80% ignite under sporadic, unpredictable circumstances — meaning there's no single "safe" time to let your guard down.
