Home battery boom: staying fire-safe as Australia installs record numbers

Australia is installing home batteries faster than ever. Paired with rooftop solar, a battery energy storage system (BESS) is a smart upgrade, and, installed correctly, a safe one. But it's worth remembering what it is: a large, high-voltage lithium battery bolted to your home. That deserves respect, and a few simple checks.
Fire services treat residential BESS as a genuine ignition source and have published specific guidance for them (Fire and Rescue NSW [FRNSW], n.d.). The reassuring news is that the risk is well managed by the standards and accreditation systems already in place, as long as your system actually follows them.
Get the install right, that's 90% of it
Safety with a home battery is mostly decided before it's ever switched on.
- Insist on AS/NZS 5139. This is the Australian and New Zealand standard for installing battery systems. It dictates where a battery can go, clearances from windows and doors, ventilation and fire separation (Standards Australia, 2019).
- Use CEC-approved gear and installers. Choose a battery on the Clean Energy Council approved list, installed by an accredited installer. Non-approved batteries can also make you ineligible for rebates (Clean Energy Council [CEC], 2025).
- Mind the location. Batteries are not permitted in bedrooms, living areas, ceiling spaces or under stairs, and should sit in a cool, ventilated, low-traffic spot away from exits (FRNSW, n.d.; Standards Australia, 2019).
- Label the meter box. Signage telling firefighters a BESS is present is part of the standard, and it matters in an emergency (FRNSW, n.d.).
Living with it safely
Once installed, upkeep is light. Keep the unit clear of stored items, don't block its vents, watch for fault lights, and schedule periodic checks with an accredited technician. Keep your installer and manufacturer contacts near the meter box (FRNSW, n.d.). If the system is ever damaged by impact, water ingress or an electrical fault, don't restart it, isolate it and call the installer.
If a BESS is involved in a fire, leave. A battery in thermal runaway burns hot and vents toxic gas (Larsson et al., 2017). Get everyone out, tell the operator the fire involves a battery system, call 000, and don't re-enter until crews give the all-clear (FRNSW, n.d.).
A home battery is one of the safer lithium-ion products you can own, precisely because it's so heavily regulated. The risk creeps in with cut corners: an unapproved unit, an unaccredited installer, a spot that doesn't meet the standard. Get those right and you can enjoy the savings with confidence.
