E-Bike and E-Scooter Batteries: Why Safe Storage Is Your Last Line of Defence
E-bikes and e-scooters are now part of everyday life across Australia, and so are the fires their batteries can start. When a lithium-ion battery fails it does not behave like an ordinary fire. It enters thermal runaway, a self-feeding chemical reaction that can reach extreme temperatures in seconds, throw out burning material, and reignite hours or even days later. Good charging habits lower the odds of that happening. A fire containment bag is what stands between a failing battery and the rest of your home when prevention is not enough.
Fire and Rescue NSW responds to around 5.7 lithium-ion battery fires every week, and a person is roughly four times more likely to be injured in a fire that starts with a lithium-ion battery.

A lithium-ion cell in thermal runaway commonly burns between 700 and 1000 degrees Celsius and vents toxic gases including carbon monoxide and hydrogen fluoride. It can flare within seconds, spread to anything nearby, and reignite well after it first appears to be out. Because many people charge devices near a front door or in a hallway, a failing battery frequently ignites across the one path people need to escape.
This is why fire services now lead with prevention. The London Fire Brigade #ChargeSafe advice is simple and worth repeating: do not charge batteries across an escape route, never charge while you are asleep, and only buy batteries and chargers from reputable sellers.
London recorded 206 e-bike and e-scooter fires in 2025, a record. In every one of the five London deaths from these fires since 2023, the person who died did not own the device that caught fire.

A containment bag does not put a battery fire out. What it does is isolate the device and hold in flame, heat and burning debris so a single failing battery does not set light to everything around it. That is the point of it: to buy you the time and the margin to move the bag outside, away from people and away from anything that will spread the fire.

When to reach for one
- Quarantine a battery that has been dropped, crushed, punctured, water damaged, or is swelling, hissing, unusually hot or giving off an odd smell.
- Store spare or off-season e-bike and e-scooter batteries away from living areas.
- Transport a suspect or damaged battery to a recycler or drop-off point without carrying an open risk in your car.
- Add a layer of protection where batteries are charged indoors, kept off soft furnishings and clear of exits on a hard, non-combustible surface.
The right bag for an e-bike or e-scooter pack

No piece of equipment replaces the basics. Charge on a hard, non-combustible surface, never on a bed or a couch. Do not leave batteries charging unattended or overnight. Stop using any battery that is swollen, damaged or running hot, and use only the charger supplied for the device. Pair those habits with a containment bag for the moment prevention fails, and you have covered both ends of the risk.
