Commercial EV Fire Safety: Pairing a 4L Extinguisher with a Full-Size Blanket

If your business charges, services or stores electric vehicles — a workshop, dealership, fleet depot or charging station — lithium-ion fire safety isn't just good practice, it's increasingly a commercial expectation. EV fires are rare, but in a setting full of vehicles, equipment and people, the priority is stopping one incident from becoming a catastrophe. That calls for commercial-grade equipment, ready before it's ever needed.

This guide explains why a layered approach works best in commercial settings, and what's inside our EV Fire Safety Bundle (4L Extinguisher + Battery Blanket).

Why lithium-ion fires demand a different response

A lithium-ion battery fire is driven by thermal runaway — a self-sustaining chemical reaction inside the cells that produces intense heat (temperatures can reach around 1600°C) and releases toxic, flammable gases. Because the fire is fuelled from within the battery, it's persistent and can reignite after appearing to be out.

Standard ABC or CO₂ extinguishers aren't formulated for this. They may suppress flames briefly but don't cool the battery or interrupt the underlying reaction. In a commercial environment, where a single vehicle fire can threaten an entire facility, purpose-built equipment is essential — and one tool alone rarely covers every scenario.

A layered, commercial-grade response

This bundle pairs two complementary tools that do different jobs:

  • The 4L extinguisher is your early-response tool. It's designed to cool the battery and interrupt the thermal runaway process, helping to reduce re-ignition when a fire is caught early.
  • The full-size fire blanket is your containment tool. At 8m x 6m it's large enough to cover an entire vehicle, helping smother flames and stop the fire spreading to neighbouring vehicles, equipment and structures.

Used together, they give staff a clear, layered plan: act early with the extinguisher, contain with the blanket, and keep the fire in check until emergency services arrive.

What's in the bundle

The EV Fire Safety Bundle is built for commercial and automotive settings and includes:

  • 4L EV Fire Extinguisher (suppression unit) — suited to EV cars, warehouses, fleets and charging stations, with an advanced formulation designed to cool the battery and interrupt thermal runaway. Complies with the European and international standards EN‑3‑7‑2004 and A1‑2007.
  • 8m x 6m EV Fire Blanket — large enough to cover a full vehicle, tested to the EN13501 standard, with a maximum working temperature of around 1100°C. Designed to contain and control fires caused by thermal runaway.

While there is currently no specific Australian Standard for lithium-ion battery fires, both items are made to recognised European and international standards. Bought together, the bundle also costs less than purchasing each item separately.

Who is this bundle for?

  • Workshops, service centres and dealerships handling EVs and hybrids.
  • Fleet operators running depots and charging facilities — see our fleet fire safety resources.
  • Charging stations and warehouses where vehicles or batteries are stored at scale.
  • Strata and body corporate properties with shared parking and charging — see our strata fire safety guide.

A note on insurance and compliance

Many insurers are beginning to expect EV-specific fire safety equipment at commercial facilities and fleet sites, and some may factor it into premiums or compliance requirements. If you're unsure what applies to your operation, it's worth contacting your insurer directly — requirements vary by business and location.

How to use it — and what it won't do

If staff face a small fire in its early stages, and only if it's safe to act:

  • Use the extinguisher first (PASS method): Pull the pin, Aim at the base of the fire or the battery, Squeeze the handle, Sweep side to side — focus on cooling the battery pack.
  • Deploy the blanket over the vehicle to contain the fire and limit its spread. Two people can deploy it faster and more safely.

A few principles matter just as much:

  • Always call 000 first. This equipment is designed to contain and control a fire until emergency services arrive — not to replace them.
  • Only act if it's safe. If the fire is large, spreading, or anyone is unsure, evacuate and wait for the fire brigade. Safety comes first.
  • Expect reignition. A damaged battery can reignite, so treat the area as hazardous until firefighters confirm it's safe.
  • Train and maintain. Familiarise staff with deployment in advance, and inspect the extinguisher regularly (pressure gauge in the green zone, pin and seal intact). For commercial use, fire safety training is strongly recommended.

Be prepared at scale

Keep the bundle accessible near charging points and storage areas, and consider multiple sets for larger sites. For other configurations, browse our full ranges of EV fire blankets and EV fire extinguishers, our other EV fire safety bundles, or add battery containment bags for damaged batteries.
