Choosing the Right EV Fire Extinguisher: A 1L to 9L Sizing Guide

The right extinguisher size depends on what you’re protecting and how much cooling you might need. Here’s how to match capacity to risk — and where an extinguisher’s limits begin.

With lithium-ion fires, the enemy is heat. A cell in thermal runaway keeps itself hot and can reignite, so the useful thing an extinguisher does is cool the cells and suppress reignition long enough to control a small, early fire or to cover your retreat. Water volume is the reason full-scale EV fires are so demanding for fire services — on the order of 2,500 gallons for a car (ICCT, 2024). A portable unit isn’t fighting that fire; it’s catching the problem early, before it becomes that fire.

Match capacity to what you’re protecting

  • 1L — e-bikes, e-scooters, single devices. Compact enough to mount by a charging point at home or in a workshop. Our 1L extinguisher suits micromobility and small-device risk, and there’s a wall-bracket version so it stays exactly where you need it.
  • 4L – 6L — larger devices, small machinery, mixed environments. A mid-size unit for garages, small commercial spaces and multi-device charging areas.
  • 9L — electric cars and home charging stations. The most cooling capacity in the portable range. Our 9L extinguisher is built for car-scale and home-charger risk.

Our extinguishers are certified to EN 3-7:2004+A1:2007, the European standard for portable extinguisher construction and performance. Full test reports are available on request.

Australia has no lithium-ion classification under AS 1841 yet — European testing is the highest benchmark available.

Be honest about the limits

No portable extinguisher — ours included — will stop an electric car in full thermal runaway. The regulator is clear that these fires are dangerous and difficult to extinguish, and can reignite (ACCC, n.d.). A portable unit is for the ignition you catch in the first minute, or to hold a path clear. Past that point the rule is simple: get clear, get everyone out, and call 000.

Rule of thumb. Size for the largest thing in the space, not the smallest. A 1L by the e-bike and a 9L by the car cover different jobs — many sites need both. Undersizing is the common mistake; the cost of the next size up is trivial next to what it protects.
