The most dangerous lithium-ion battery in most homes and workshops is not the one nobody thought about. It is the one somebody already suspects: the pack that looks a bit swollen, the drill battery that was dropped off scaffolding, the e-bike battery that came with a recall email nobody actioned. It is still sitting on a shelf, in a cupboard, or worse, still going on charge.

Batteries rarely fail without warning. In most incidents there was a period, sometimes days or weeks, where something was visibly or behaviourally wrong and the battery kept being used anyway. That window is the whole opportunity. What follows is a practical decision guide for what to do with a battery you no longer trust.

Seven reasons to retire a battery immediately

Any one of these means the battery comes out of service now, not at the end of the job.

Australian recall data is worth taking seriously here. Recalls covering tens of thousands of units have been issued across e-bikes, e-scooters, power banks and tool batteries, and the check takes two minutes on the Product Safety Australia site.

If the battery is already hot, swelling in front of you, hissing, smoking or leaking

That is a fire, not a storage problem. Do not put it in a bag, a box or a bin.

  • Get people away from it and close the door behind you.
  • Call 000 immediately.
  • Only if it is clearly safe, and only in the very early stage, move it outside away from buildings, vehicles and anything combustible. If there is any doubt, leave it and evacuate.
  • Do not inhale the smoke. Lithium-ion off-gassing includes hydrogen fluoride and other irritants that are hazardous in an enclosed space.
  • Expect reignition. A pack that appears to have stopped can restart, so keep everyone clear until the brigade says otherwise.

The four mistakes people make with a suspect battery

  • Putting it in the kerbside bin. A damaged cell crushed in a collection truck or a sorting line is one of the leading causes of fires in the waste and recycling chain, with industry estimates running to five figures a year nationally. It is also illegal in a growing number of jurisdictions.
  • Charging it one more time to see. Charging is the highest-risk state for a compromised cell. There is nothing useful to learn from the test and a great deal to lose.
  • Storing it in the house. A suspect battery in a hallway cupboard, under a bed or on a shelf above a workbench puts the failure point next to combustibles and across an escape route.
  • Leaving it in a vehicle. A car in Australian summer sun is an oven, and elevated temperature is one of the things that pushes a marginal cell over the line.

What to do instead: isolate, observe, dispose

The goal between the moment you stop trusting a battery and the moment it is properly disposed of is simple. If it fails, it should fail somewhere that does not take the building with it.

  1. Disconnect and stop charging. Remove it from the device or charger if that can be done without force or further damage.
  2. Let it sit and watch it. If it has just been dropped or has been charging hard, give it time somewhere open and non-combustible. Internal shorts can take hours to develop into a thermal event.
  3. Isolate it in a containment bag. A dedicated fire-resistant bag is the practical control here: it contains and slows a thermal event and limits spread to whatever is around it. Tape over exposed terminals first so nothing can short across them.
  4. Store it away from the building fabric. A garage floor, a shed, a non-combustible external store, away from exits, vehicles, fuel, aerosols and anything you cannot replace. Where you would notice a problem, not where nobody goes.
  5. Book the disposal, do not defer it. Quarantine is a holding step measured in days, not months.

The premium fire-resistant containment bag is sized for exactly this job. Internal dimensions are 42 x 38 x 22cm, which takes most e-bike and e-scooter packs, power tool batteries, laptops, power banks, drone and camera batteries, or several smaller cells together. Construction is dual layer: a silicone-coated fibreglass exterior over a heat-reflective aluminium lining, rated to 1100 degrees C instantaneous and 550 degrees C sustained. It weighs 1.9kg, closes with a heavy-duty zip, and has reinforced handles and backpack straps so a battery can be carried out or driven to a drop-off point without being loose in the boot.

Fire-resistant, not fireproof, and the difference matters

A containment bag resists heat, contains a thermal event and slows its spread, and reduces the chance of a single battery failure becoming a building fire. That buys time to get people out and get 000 on the way.

It does not extinguish a battery in thermal runaway, it does not permanently contain one, and it is not a fireproof safe. It is not sized or intended for an EV traction pack. Any supplier promising a bag will stop a battery fire outright is overselling the product. We would rather you knew what you were buying.

For a full e-bike, scooter or machine, the control is a containment blanket over the equipment, not a bag.

Disposing of it properly

Never in the kerbside bin, and never in the recycling bin. Australian options:

  • B-cycle drop-off points. The national battery recycling scheme has thousands of collection points in hardware stores, supermarkets, battery retailers and council facilities. Loose cells and device batteries are straightforward.
  • Council community recycling centres. Most take household batteries free, and many now take larger e-bike and e-scooter packs. Ring ahead for anything damaged or swollen, because a damaged pack often needs to be declared and handled separately.
  • The retailer or manufacturer. For a recalled battery this is usually a required step, and for e-bike and tool brands there is often a take-back path.
  • Licensed e-waste and battery recyclers. The right answer for workplace volumes and for anything damaged. Look for certification to AS/NZS 5377:2022.

Tape the terminals before transport, keep the battery in its containment bag, and tell the receiving site that it is damaged rather than leaving it in a general bin on arrival.

Coming for NSW businesses. The NSW Product Lifecycle Responsibility Regulation commences on 1 October 2026, introducing Australia's first mandatory product stewardship scheme for batteries under 5kg, with penalties reaching into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. If your operation supplies, uses or accumulates battery volume, disposal chain of custody stops being a housekeeping matter and becomes a compliance one.

For workplaces: build a quarantine point

In a workshop, warehouse, hire fleet or trade business, "someone will deal with it" is how suspect batteries end up in a store room next to the packaging. Set up the alternative once and it runs itself:

  • A designated quarantine location, non-combustible, away from charging areas, exits, stock and vehicles, with containment bags kept there rather than fetched from elsewhere.
  • A simple rule everybody knows: swollen, damaged, wet, hot, or recalled means it goes to quarantine, no judgement call required, no permission needed.
  • A register, even a clipboard. Date, battery, reason, who quarantined it, disposal date. This is the evidence of due diligence a regulator or insurer will ask for.
  • A scheduled disposal run, monthly or by volume, to a licensed recycler.
